POSITION: News Journalist
LOCATION: Fareham, Hampshire
SALARY: £20- 30k dependant upon experience
DURATION: Permanent
AVERAGE WEEKLY HOURS: 37.5 (reduced hours possible)
PENSION: Stakeholder pension available
Mercator Media Limited is a business-to-business media company that publishes magazines and produces exhibitions, conferences and websites, predominately serving the commercial marine sector. Established in 1989, the company now has 50 employees. Mercator’s magazines have pan-European, or international readership bases.
We are looking for an experienced News Journalist to join our News Desk and help develop our weekly email news service in vertical markets.
Required Skills & experience:
- Finding news, especially from original sources
- Recognising relevant stories and writing them for different readerships
- Researching and planning
- Writing in a ‘short and snappy’ style
- Building story structure, with emphasis on intros
- Writing news stories from visits to events, interviews, and reports
- Giving life to dull press releases
- Turning a story on its head to bring out the main points
- Using content management systems
- Attending and exhibiting at trade shows.
The suitable candidate will have:
- An excellent grasp of the English language including in depth knowledge of punctuation and grammar.
- Ability to work within strict time deadlines.
- An excellent personal presentation and strong communication and networking skills.
- Adaptable and flexible.
- Able to take direction yet show initiative where possible.
